Sustainability 101: Eco Choice Aotearoa Licence

Eco Choice Aotearoa is a government initiative begun in 1989, to help combat the rising numbers of unsustainably made products flooding the markets, giving consumers a mark to buy sustainably and a benchmark for businesses, to keep on track and making good choices, investing not only in the next quarter, but the future.

We recently pursued our own Eco Choice Aotearoa Licence, for our new wall-lining system, SwiftLiner. SwiftLiner is a fast, easy-install solution providing durable, and flexible wall-lining ideal for small homes, and commercial areas.

Eco Choice licences are awarded only upon rigorous assessment of the company and its practices.

It begins with the sourcing of raw materials, for us, it’s the radiata pine of the South Island, carefully culled without destroying the surrounding ecosystem. The MDF is made from off-cuts and recycled wood, utilizing all possible materials to make a useful product and reduce waste. Our laminates are sourced from Europe, from companies who hold similar licence’s from ‘sister’ organizations or others like the FSC.

Next is the manufacturing, taking into account the factory itself. The factory runs on the New Zealand grid, which boasts an impressive 80-85% of renewable energy. Cardboard, wood scraps, and wrappings are recycled or re-used. Eco Choice not only looks after the environment but also the people, closely scrutinizing the workplace environment and its atmosphere. Compac Group strives to maintain the best possible culture, keeping robust safety processes in place, safeguarding workers and providing all the support we can to our employees, providing channels for any concerns or issues that may arise.

Finally, the end of product life is evaluated. If any products should be returned damaged or be considered seconds they will be reused, or recycled in some manner depending upon the extent of the damage. SwiftLiner will last a considerable time, decades, and if returned to the factory after that lifetime will be recycled accordingly.

We’re thrilled to be awarded our Eco Choice Aotearoa Licence, proving ourselves to be a sustainable company, dedicated to thoughtful practices ecologically and community-wise, supporting the environment and the people we’re surrounded with. We look forward to continued growth in these areas, finding new ways to excel.
